As far as blades go, there are a lot of of different styles to choose from. Check out gramercy tools. And tools for working wood.

Traditonally a “bow saw” is beefier with a longer and wider blade usually 18 -36″ long and 3/8 – 1″ wide. Think of this like the fret sawpared to a coping saw.
